Renowned Ghanaian musician Rocky Dawuni has shared a story about how his brother influenced his journey to becoming a musician.

In an interview with Onua TV, the Grammy nominee shared how, despite his acceptance into the University of Ghana, he had refused to go to school to pursue his music career.

“I wanted to be a musician. Everybody would look at me; my neighbours would look at me, and tell me to stop it and find work to do. At that time, my older brother was accepted to UG Legon. I had also qualified to come and read philosophy and psychology there. But I refused to come to school because I was so intent on starting my music career at that time. I was afraid that too much education would prevent me from following my dreams at that time,” he shared.

In a clever move to support both his brother's aspirations and his family’s wishes, Dawuni's older brother devised a plan.

“School had been open for two weeks. So he left Legon; he came to Koforidua, and he's like, ‘You are a fan of Rex Omar and Nat Brew and all of those people. Do you know where they live?’ I'm like, ‘no’, he's like, ‘they all live in Accra. So if you come to school there, you'll be able to find them and see all of these people to show you roots. All these groups that you want to learn and emulate, this is where they are.’ So the following day, I took my bag and everything and followed him,” he said.

Remarkably, the very next day, Dawuni encountered Ufi Brooks, the younger brother of Nat Brew.

This chance meeting led to the formation of a band, marking the beginning of Dawuni's successful music career.
