Husband shoots wife over alleged plantain theft

Asamankese, March 6, GNA - A 50-year-old farmer, who attempted to kill his wife by shooting at her with a cap gun has been remanded in prison custody by the Asamankese Circuit Court till March 16. Kwadwo Afedinah pleaded not guilty to a charge of attempt to murder his wife, Vida Anyani, because he alleged that their 20-year-old son, Emmanuel Afedinah had taken a finger of plantain he had kept in the house.

Giving the facts of the case before the Court, presided over by Mr Kofi Akrowiah, Police Chief Inspector J. F. Idan said Afedinah and Vida lived at Fantuma, a village near Amako, in the West Akyem District. He said on February 2, the accused attacked his son, Emmanuel for allegedly taking a finger of plantain he had kept for his own use and the two engaged in a fight and Vida separated them.

After the separation, Afedinah entered his room and brought out is cap gun, so Vida and the son took to their heels but he chased the wife to a distance of about 30 metres and shot at her and hit the knee. Inspector Idan said Vida was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital where she was referred to the Koforidua Regional Hospital for further treatment

The relatives of Vida, however, removed her from the hospital to a local herbalist who removed the bullet. Mar. 6, 05
