Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale has been embroiled in an online feud regarding the #StopGalamsey movement buzzing on social media.

This comes after he reacted to the trending movement, accusing certain social media influencers of being backed by unknown political parties to promote the hashtag.

He advised the youth not to be deceived by these influencers.

Shatta Wale’s stance, however, has since been met with backlash from netizens who accused him of attempting to derail the conversation.

Amid the controversy, a 2014 tweet resurfaced in which Shatta claimed to be involved in gold mining: “I’m into gold mining now.... #bestbusiness,” he posted on March 15, 2014.

Netizens also released photos of him at a mining site alongside images of gold coins, leading to speculations about his potential connection to galamsey activities.

Although Shatta Wale has not directly addressed these speculations, he has shared a recent tweet of him stating that he has found a buyer for a gold bar he owns.

This controversy comes at a time when calls for the government to take action against illegal mining have intensified.

Background

On September 22, 2024, several individuals, including social media influencer Ama Governor and model Glenn Samm, were arrested during a three-day protest against galamsey.

The protesters, now remanded by an Accra Circuit Court, are facing multiple charges including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, and assault on public officers.

They have pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to reappear in court on October 8, 2024.
