Popular comedian and television host, Kwaku Sintim Misa known by his stage name KSM, has questioned the Ghana Actors’ Guild (GAG) asking for what benefits they offer their members in relation to helping them become better actors and explore.
KSM when asked why he was not part of the association answered that, he does not see how effective an Actors’ Guild can be in Ghana considering the entertainment market in the country.
“Respectfully, not to paint a bad image of the Actors’ Guild, I don’t see how effective it is considering our entertainment market in Ghana. The guild that I know of has an obligation to their membership. For example, if you’re in an actor’s guild in one of these developed countries, you pay a certain amount of fee and they also are responsible for certain things like your upkeep. When their films are being shot, they’ll have to consult the guild with their casting list and everything and the guild has an input, so I’m saying that the guild has something to do to offer its membership. I don’t think that we have gotten to that stage yet where for example Ghana Actors’ Guild will say a member is entitled to something that’s different from somebody who is not a member. All I’m saying is, in order for Actors’ Guild to be effective, there have to be structures. The guild should be able to support actors, directors and screenwriters to produce their movies. There is no such law to properly straighten and structure the guild. So I’m saying that I’m not a member of Ghana Actors’ Guild because I don’t think that we have gotten to a point where one can take advantage of the guild to flourish and explore.” He said on Hitz FM.
He however stated that, he is not condemning or undermining people for joining the Guild, but appealing to Executive members to put structures in place that members of the guild can benefit from.
