Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has recounted how he discovered he had been nominated for the BET Awards.

In an interview with Kafui Dey, monitored by GhanaWeb, Stonebwoy revealed that he had no prior knowledge of his nomination.

According to him, he was on a music video shoot in Nigeria when he received an email informing him about the nomination.

“…I remember I was in Nigeria shooting a music video, and when the nominations came out, my name was there. For those who don’t know, I had no idea how I even ended up at the BETs.

“If anyone thinks we were aware or that we submitted our music here and there… I don’t know. And it’s not anything within management, to be very honest,” he said.

Stonebwoy further noted that the award had a positive impact on his career, although he believes he did not fully maximise the benefits that came with winning it in 2015.

“I think my life would have been better anyway because winning a BET at that time, as a reggae dancehall or afrodancehall artiste, is what Burna Boy represents today.

“…I remember vividly that it became a situation where there was a certain media attack, and that also took away a lot of the prominence we could have gained from it,” he added.

Stonebwoy was adjudged the winner of the 2015 Best International Act: Africa award, beating notable artistes such as Sarkodie, AKA, Fally Ipupa, Sauti Sol, The Soil, Wizkid, and Yemi Alade.
