I’ll choose the name ‘Ghana Film Industry’ over Gollywood – Catherine Afeku

Minister for Tourism, Art and Culture, Catherine Ablema Afeku has suggested a preferred name for the Ghanaian movie industry in place of the newly created Gollywood.

Catherine Afeku believes the name; ‘Ghana Film Industry’ would be an ideal name for the movie industry rather than the "Gollywood" for a number of reasons.

Speaking in an interview with Ghanaweb, the Member of Parliament for the Evalue Gwira Constituency, urged Ghanaian filmmakers to put pressure on the government with their contribution and statement to help enrich their debate on the new name given to the film industry.

According Catherine Afeku, “it is immature to conclude on the name given to the film industry, industry people should be allowed to come up with thoughts and suggestions, that is how you enrich debate, let them with come up with inputs from stakeholders and that will inform the ultimate decision.”

Catherine Afeku made these comments at the just ended Exclusive Men of the Year Africa Awards (EMY Award) which took place on Saturday 18th August, at the Kempinski Gold Coast Hotel.

Stakeholders, comprising the leadership of the various groups of the movie sector launched the name; ‘Gollywood’ at the Ghana 60 Years on Film Summit which was held on July 12, 2018, at the Accra International Conference Centre.

This has engendered controversies, with major film associations dissociating themselves from the decision.



Industry players like, Akorfa Edjeani Asiedu, Film producer and director, Leila Djansi, Micheal Ola, Kwakwo Preko Dankwa and others have kicked against Gollywood, the newly created name for Ghana’s film industry.
