I'm more popular in South Africa and Nigeria than Ghana - D-Black

Ghanaian Hip-hop artiste, Desmond Kwesi Blackmore better known as D-Black has revealed that he is very popular in Nigeria and South Africa compared to his own home country Ghana.

D-Black who made his maiden appearance on the most watched satirical talk show in Ghana, Tonight with Nii KpaKpo Thompson argued that because of his primary language of rap i.e. English, it makes it easier for his followers in South Africa and Nigeria to better relate to what he says. D-Black has been quite dormant in the music industry after he released his second album about four years ago.

Speaking to host Nii Kpakpo Thompson on the Tonight show last Friday on Viasat1, D-Black also disclosed that collaboration with Twi rappers in Ghana is often a win-win arrangement because it gives both artistes the opportunity to reach a wider market.

“Basically I make music in the English language, so when I want to touch the masses, I collaborate. When you collaborate, both artistes feed on each other’s market. I am more popular in South Africa and Nigeria because everybody understands what I am saying and the singer who is singing in Twi wants to get in the external market, so often he is getting into the external market and I am also getting into his market at the same time and we are both benefiting. Music is music,” the businessman cum musician stated.

D-Black also hinted that he plans to release his third album in July which has about twenty tracks. “I feel like it’s time to put out a new body of work. In July, I will put out a new album. It’s a twenty track album and there are lots of features on the album. I have a song that I did with Castro that i never released that is on the album, I have something with Ofori Amponsah, Sarkodie, VVIP, EL, Stonebwoy,” D-Black stated.

He however pointed out that music is not as lucrative as it used to be in the past, insisting that most of the money that musicians generate is from performances and endorsement deals. “The music doesn’t sell anymore because we are in a digital age, everybody can download on their phones,” he noted.
