Former skipper of the senior national team Stephen Appiah has revealed for the first time that he would not be who he is today without the support of ‘kenkey’ sellers at Chorkor, where he grew up.

The retired footballer has therefore expressed gratitude to the Kenkey sellers in Chorkor for the support they gave him during the early days of his career.

According to the former Juventus star, the Kenkey sellers came to his rescue at a time when he could not afford meals after training.

“I remember growing up; I mean I went through a lot. At times you go to training and you’re even thinking of what you’re eating after training and you see these food sellers and the Kenkey sellers in my area, I mean at times I used to go and sit there and then they will give me Kenkey to eat and all that,” ‘Tornado’ told Henry Asante Twum on Extra Time on Starr 103.5FM Saturday January 24, 2015.

The first ever skipper to qualify the Black Stars to the World Cup has therefore promised to organise a testimonial match in honour of the Chorkor Kenkey sellers and all Ghanaians who supported him to become who he is today.

“I think Ghanaians have been true to me as in supporting me; they supported me till today that I said I am calling it done so I think I have to give that respect or I have to give back to them in terms of playing a testimonial game to tell them bye bye for their support, for the love that they’ve shown to me. So I think that it’s the right thing to do and definitely there will be a testimonial match,” Appiah told Asante Twum.
