Renowned Gospel musician Ohemaa Mercy has opened up about her past struggles before becoming a household name.
In an interview with TV3 ahead of her ‘Bethel Experience’ concert, she shared her harrowing experiences as a teacher, where she faced financial difficulties and had her belongings taken away to settle debts.
The ‘Edin Jesus’ singer revealed that life was so unbearable that she often locked herself in her room for days, feeling embarrassed and hopeless.
Ohemaa Mercy recounted a particularly difficult period after the birth of her first child when she became a "hospital prisoner" due to unpaid bills, with no assistance from her church.
She also shared how her mother’s disappointment added to her struggles, recalling times when she had to walk miles to her mother’s house for food while heavily pregnant.
Feeling abandoned and disappointed by God, she contemplated suicide.
“I gave up, I stopped singing in church and didn’t want to hear anything about music because I was going through a lot and I felt at a point God had disappointed me because of my commitment and sacrifices.
“Sometimes, I would go to my mum for help and she would look at me and say 'I’m really disappointed.' I remember I was pregnant with my firstborn and I had to go to my mum for food one week. I could not face the world."
She continued “I had to even take a knife to kill myself because I felt at this point, there won’t be any good thing for me.”
Reflecting on her journey, Ohemaa Mercy now sees her life as a testament to God’s unwavering love. She believes her past struggles were preparation for her Tehillah, The Bethel Experience concert, which she sees as ordained by God to save souls.
“God will never make you rest, he will melt you, he will break you to the point where you will run to him and he will open up to you who he had made you,” she said.
She encouraged Christians to remain steadfast in prayer during difficult times, believing that the devil’s opposition is a sign of impending breakthroughs.
