Music entrepreneur and newly elected Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Baba Sadiq, has shared his vision for the creative arts sector.
In an interview with Hitz FM on December 10, 2024, Baba Sadiq emphasized that his primary focus will be on representing the people of Okaikwei Central while also leveraging opportunities to support the creative industry.
He highlighted the importance of amending the current copyright law to align with the newly created national IP policy, noting that the intellectual property market in Africa is valued at around $100 billion.
According to him, updating these laws will unlock significant opportunities for creators and generate much-needed revenue for the industry.
“I've always spoken about specific bills that I think need to, but all of it speaks to the heart of industry. You know, I've always made the case that the copyright law we currently have is not fit for purpose and needs to be amended.
“I've said that it needs to be amended to be consistent with the newly created national IP policy because the intellectual property market is huge in Africa alone and started to be about 100 billion, which will unlock a lot of opportunities for creators and provide much-needed revenue for industry,” he stated.
He also stressed the need to fully operationalise the Creative Art Agency and the Creative Art Fund, which he sees as crucial for the sector's growth.
Sadiq expressed his commitment to pushing for private members' bills that address these issues, taking advantage of the current governance structure allowing such initiatives.
"There are specific promises I made to the people of Okaikwei Central who voted for me to go there. You know. So the primary focus, as much as I'm an industry person, will be to create opportunities for growth and opportunities for prosperity for people in the Okaikwei Central constituency. Going forward, if there's anything that we have to do for industry, we will,” he added.
