Sandema, (U/E) July 15, GNA - The Builsa District Chief Executive, Mr Thomas Alonsi has said that the moral break down of the society especially among youth could be minimised if the Ghana Education Service places more emphasis on the study of culture in the school curriculum. He also asked parents not to allow the viewing of television and video sets take away their traditional role of inculcating good moral values in their children.
Mr Alonsi made these observations during this year's Inter District Basic Schools Cultural Festival held at Sandema in the Upper East Region under the theme: "Culture, The Bedrock For Discipline In Our Society". The District Chief Executive condemned the practice of using profane language and lyrics as displayed currently in modern Ghanaian music, saying it goes a long way in influencing the youth to engage in and experience the use of drugs and sex.
He pointed out that posterity would not forgive teachers and parents if they do not act now to reverse the trend of the youth who innocently copy foreign cultures since it was having a bad influence on their lives.
The Deputy Regional Director of Education, Mr Francis Ayaaba said the GES is determined to help strengthen cultural studies in the Region hoping that the scheme would go a long way of ensuring a disciplined society with disciplined people living in peace. The Regional Cultural Officer of the GES, Mr Daniel Laari urged stakeholders of education to take keen interest and support the cultural renaissance.
The Bolgatanga Model School at Zaare emerged the first winner of the contest and would represent the Upper East Region at the national festoval this year. 15 July 05
