Sarkodie dropped ‘Kanta’ on Sunday as a reply to M.anifest’s ‘god MC’ which some believe was directed at Sarkodie following the latter’s release of ‘bossy’.
Social media platforms have since been buzzing with comments from music lovers expressing their views on the seemingly heated beef between the two Ghanaian hip-hop artistes.
Selorm Branttie, Communications Director at Imani Center for Policy & Education has penned down his observation about Ghanaians on the issue.
He wrote on his Facebook wall:
The same people who say M.anifest raps in English and is therefore trying to be foreign are the same people dissing GTP cloth which is authentic Ghanaian fashion produce.
Same people who say Sark appeals to local people are the same people who like him in his rags, chinchilla and shades even in the darkness. Same people forget that M.anifest wears beads, local clothes and even in his videos uses a lot of local murals and avatars.
Tells you something. Those who are the more “local” people see a lot of foreign things as cool, to aspire to, to die for, eg cars, clothes women, etc.
So more of the “local” poor functionally literate women and men are more likely to bleach, do sporting waves, pay the biggest money for weaves (in relation to their personal incomes), and other pro-western fashion statements.
Same for the pastors. Most “local” pastors wear outlandish versions of western suits, shoes, hats and have pictures of a white Jesus and profess anointing oils from as diverse areas as the Mount of Olives and other exotic locations.
Most of the “elitist” pastors wear more kaftans, GTP, Woodin, and seem to wear lesser amounts of suits and such.
So they say Sark is killing it cos he mostly raps in fast twi. Others say M.anifest is killing it cos he has deeper punchlines and is more philosophical.
What I see?
Old money vs New Money. Wealth v Riches. African Identity v Identity Crisis Sense of Self v People’s Perceptions Life lessons v Braggadocio Think Music v I wanna Impress the girl music Natural v Narcissism Madina v Tema…
I am for the home turf. I dont mess with my GTP.
I like Sark, but I will play a M.anifest album in my car all day.
PS: Braggadocio is a form of rap. Google it. That's the type Sark plays. There are 2 schools in rap methodology, the philosophical tone, with the archetypes being Nas, Tupac, the Roots, Common, Dead Prez, etc
Then there’s the braggadocio that talks about bling, and ice, like Lil Wayne, Cash Money, Drake, Ty Dollar Sign, and so many many more.
Commercial rap is more of braggadocio, and “conscious” rap is more philosophical. Its all about the mood.
Most people follow the music without being academic. That’s why very few people understood the punchline by M.anifest that said his tastes range between Nina Simone and Koo Nimo. You have to know your music to understand what he meant.
These are revolutionaries in black music genres…
Soul and Hi-life. Thats an academic who knows the roots of his art. Go figure.
