It is uncommon for one to walk through town, in recent times, without either seeing four out of six guys either in sagged trousers or shorts.

Most of the young guys caught up in this style of dressing usually wear boxer shorts which becomes the main focus instead of the trousers.

Sagging which is commonly known as “Otto Pfister” in Ghana is the practice of wearing a pair of trousers or shorts below the waist which reveals parts of the underwear.

It is believed that this phenomenon was widely welcomed in Ghana when a German coach of Ghana's national football team called Otto Pfister arrived in Ghana.

Despite his success with Ghana, this man always had his trousers below his waist line and rarely pulls it up. It seems many of the youth at the time of his tenure adopted this style of dressing and has lived on.

Most of the young men who sag their tousers carry the idea of exhibiting the fashion flair in them; hence it gives them the platform to outdoor the boxer shorts or any underwear they wear.

Speaking with Mr Razak Musah Amegah, Project Associate at Penplusbytes, “there is no fashion sense in sagging of trousers, because I am told that in some western prisons, it a sign that a person is gay”.

He added that most young people especially celebrities who sag their trousers do not basically understand it but rather follow the bandwagon.

Mr Sergio Y. was of the view that there is a fashion sense in sagging of trousers because it makes one look better and more stylish especially when young.

“Sagging of trousers changes me from the old school fashion style, and it matches well with my body shape and the way I walk...I don't want to be wearing my trousers like my grandfather used to wear it”, he added.

Sagging of trousers amongst the Ghanaian youth seems to be growing as it can be spotted at different places including churches, banks, and at different events and programmes.
