20 year old medical student of the University of Ghana, Jennifer Maame Yaa Kyekye Tete has been crowned Miss Earth Ghana, 2012 at a keenly contested finale at the National Theatre, on August 24. She won an official car, GH? 10,000.00, wardrobe for one year, and will represent Ghana at the world finals of Miss Earth.

The finale started with 18 beautiful and intelligent young ladies vying for a chance to advance the cause of environmental protection and preservation. After preliminary rounds of introductions, presentation of talent and an Eco-Fashion showcase, the top 10 finalists were selected to include: Rhoda Brown Wood, Abena Dickson, Chaana Abdul-Razak, Maame Yaa Kyekye Tete, Selina Antwi, Martha Mensah Adae, Irene Akendita Amoro, Aseye Eleblu, Farouza Bawah and Adjoa Densu.

The top 10 finalists presented their various projects on environmental preservation and conservation to the judges, who further narrowed the competition down to 5. The top 5 were Martha Mensah, Chaana Abdul-Razak, Aseye Eleblu, Maame Yaa Kyekye Tete and Rhoda Brown Wood. The top 5 then answered several questions on the environment to determine who was best fit for the Miss Earth Ghana crown. Jennifer Maame Yaa Kyekye Tete came tops when she impressed the judges on what she would do as Miss Earth Ghana to promote the conservation of the environment.

Martha Mensah, was 3rd runner up (Miss Earth fire) and would work towards the protection of lands, aforestation, and related issues. She won a refrigerator, GH? 1000.00, and fabrics from sponsors. Chaana Abdul-Razak emerged the 2nd runner up (Miss Earth water) and would work towards solving the issues affecting water. She took home a 32” plasma TV, GH? 3,000.00, wardrobe for three months and participation in an international event. Rhoda Brown Wood was 1st runner up (Miss Earth Air) and would work towards the sanitization of air. She won home theatre set, GH? 5,000.00 cash, wardrobe for six months and a participation in an International event.

Other special awards on the night include Miss Earth Walk – Martha Mensah, Miss Earth Project – Aseye Eleblu, Miss Earth Talent – Selina Antwi, Miss Earth Eloquence – Farouza Bawah, Miss Earth Face – Rhoda Brown Wood, and Miss Earth Poise and attitude – Imaculate Siddick.

The ‘green’ themed finale was directed by Seth Osei Nyarko and saw performances from top music acts including Kwabena Kwabena, Keche, Yaa Yaa and others. Miss Earth Ghana is sponsored by ACI Construction, Somotex Ghana Ltd (LG Somovision), Primus Africa, Schwarzkopf; and supported by Ministries of Environment, Science and Technology, Land and Natural Resources, the Environmental Protection Agency, Ghana Wildlife Division and Society the Dept. of Parks and Gardens.
