KOD Kofi Okyere Darko, one of the finest radio presenters in Ghana is always commended for the good work he is doing on the airwaves in Accra and beyond. His wonderful choice of music selection is excellent.
Fully Ashanti blooded (he comes from Ashanti Mampong and Akrokyre) was born at Winneba in 1977. Even though Kofi wanted to become an air force man, he was always involved in entertainment programs far back in school. Read all about Kofi's successful showbiz journey.
GB: Do you have any other name that we don't know?
KOD: My real name is Richard Aidoo.
GB: How did your career start?
KOD: I learnt it from my cousins Kwesi Kyei Darkwa and Yaw Addo Darkwa.
GB: How long have yo been in this business?
KOD: I started serious radio presenting at Radio Gold since 1997 till now.
GB: How successful would you say you have been from then till now?
KOD: I would say I was the youngest but now there is no big event without KOD, ranging from Planning Committee to MC. Talk about Ghana Music Awards, Miss Malaika and Nescafe African Revelation.
GB: What would you say is the secret behind this success?
KOD: I think I love what I am doing and I always put God first in anything I do.
GB: What challenges did you face in coming this far?
KOD: I will say it has not been easy. I was once a sales boy at a clothing shop. I later decided to try at Vibe FM because I liked KSM. Suddenly, I came across a lady by name Cindy who shattered my dreams. She was the host of Smash TV so I decided to send my application and all she could say was; I was not good enough for that station. I later saw a vacancy at Radio Gold for presenters. I had an encouragement from Lumba who is my cousin and that has brought me this far.
GB: What has been your most satisfactory achievement?
KOD: My biggest achievement is having been able to put smiles on the faces of people and I assure you that the biggest is yet to come.
GB: What is your deepest regret in life?
KOD: It's my mother's death because I thought I could have done better than what I did for her and I am happy I spent a few hours with her before her death.
GB: How would you say you have influenced people through your career?
KOD: It has been very positive even beyond what I do on radio because my work has made great musicians like Dasebre Dwamena, Ofori Amponsah, Nana Kwame, Tinny and 4X4.
GB: How did you get into artiste management?
KOD: It all started with Ofori Amponsah. Daddy Lumba asked me to help him manage this new artiste, I accepted and since then I kept on doing PR for him. It continued to Max Kofi, Daseebre and so many others.
GB: Are you married?
KOD: Not yet.
GB: Do you have any kids?
KOD: No.
GB: How long do you wish to be in showbiz?
KOD: On radio, I can't really tell when but with entertainment I think it is part of me so I can't stop. It is really my middle name.
GB: What do you want to do after your present profession?
KOD: KKD has a company called Finest company in England which is solely into advertising and he is opening a branch in Ghana so I will be taking care of it and it will keep me busy.
GB: Who do you look up to as a role model?
KOD: KKD, KSM and Kwame Sefa Kayi.
GB: Do you have any aims of leaving Radio Gold?
KOD: I have no intention of leaving Radio Gold because no one can give me what Radio Gold is offering.
GB: Is there anything you dislike about your job?
KOD: I hate the fame part of it because you don't have your privacy in this job. You go out and all you have to do is to smile and keep waving your hand like a flag.
GB: What are your hobbies?
KOD: Listening to music, reading and going out with friends on TV and Radio.
GB: What is your favourite food?
KOD: Yam and Palava Sauce.
GB: What is your favourite colour?
KOD: Blue.
GB: Who do you like on radio apart from yourself?
KOD: I like everybody who does what I do.
GB: Do you have a problem with anybody?
KOD: There are certain people who do not even work at Radio Gold but do not get on well with me. I don't think their names are important.
GB: Do you have anybody to apologize to?
KOD: My first apology goes to my mum for not giving her the necessary attention she needed. All I was doing was for her but it's unfortunate she didn't live to enjoy them. My second apology goes to everyone I have wronged especially the ladies. For my appreciation, I thank the Almighty God for my life, I also thank Kweku Boafo Agyemang and Kwame Sefa Kayi for giving me the opportunity to work at Radio Gold. Last but not the least to KKD for showing me the light.
GB: Finally, what is your word of advice to the general public and the young ones you inspire.
KOD: As a country, I think we should fight for the best and never be content with what we have. For the young ones, with hard work, determination and the fear of God, they can go wherever they want to.
