Lace rage

Lace is an openwork fabric, patterned with open holes in the work. It is either made by machine or hand. A true lace is created when a thread is looped, twisted or braided to other threads independently from a backing fabric. Oftentimes, open spaces are created as part of the lace fabric.

According to Wikipedia, lace is often used as an accompaniment on certain fabrics and could also be used alone as tops, gowns or used on other fashion accessories.

TYPES

•Bobbin lace

As the name suggests, it is made with bobbins and a pillow. The bobbins, turned from wood, bone or plastic, hold threads which are woven together and held in place with pins stuck in the pattern on the pillow. It is also known as bone-lace. Chantilly lace is a type of bobbin lace.

•Crocheted lace

This includes Irish crochet, pineapple crochet, and filet crochet.

•French lace

This is one of the most exotic and expensive lace fabrics.

•Guipure lace

It is the epitome of haute couture fashion. Traditionally made of cotton, guipure may be found in rayon and although rarely, in silk. Guipure is often misconceived and frequently, it is confused with lace due to its pattern of emptiness and texture. It is an embroidered fabric lacking a base, where the spaces and links between the motifs form a more or less substantial surface. Also known as Venetian lace, it is one of the most elegant of all lace qualities and is distinguished from other types of lace by its weight and design. Generally, guipure is heavier than lace.

When lace comes as dresses

Think metallic: It’s vintage and in vogue. If you have a metallic lace fabric dress, it creates a flirty shift style, especially with some patent accessories and metallic jewellery.

Accessorising: High-heeled shoes: Pumps or peep toes blend well with lace fabric. A long lace dress can make you look short, therefore get a good pair of heels to nail the look. Go for shoes that are in solid colours and do not have too much distracting details. This can clash with the dress and take away the shine from it.

Get minimal jewellery: Here, endeavour to strike a good balance between the lace and accessories you wear. Lace dresses are visually very attractive and do not need heavy jewellery.
