Legislative Instrument for creative arts will get parliamentary approval before December - Okraku-Mantey

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey, has assured that his ministry is committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve parliamentary approval for a Legislative Instrument (LI) for the creative arts industry.

The LI, which is currently before parliament, will establish a legal framework to support the growth of Ghana's creative industry and address related issues.

As reported by 3news.com, Mark Okraku-Mantey, speaking during a nationwide stakeholder engagement, emphasised the importance of the initiative and reiterated the ministry's dedication to securing parliament's endorsement.

“This very one, Hon. Agyapa Mercer says that he wants to make sure it happens before December. And he wants to make sure that our LI is safe before they (parliament) rise. Any industry that does not have a government document, I can assure you that you are likely to die poor in it. The fundamentals, the reason why most of us seem to age and do not have money is because we don't have documents or laws that govern this industry,” he said.

Also at the event, Deputy CEO of the Creative Arts Agency, Frank Kwabena Owusu, expressed his hope that the LI will aid in developing the creative arts sector in the country.

“The moment it becomes law then the Creative Arts Agency will become an authority and be able to properly regulate the sector. You know, we've been crying for regulation. How are rights protected? How are we promoting our creatives locally and internationally, what backing do we have? This is the backing, government has done it just to finalise it and give us the attention that it deserves,” he said.
