One of Ghana's lawmakers, Frimpong Yaw Addo, has challenged movie makers based in Kumasi (Kumawood) to reinvent themselves to suit the current trend, rather than continuing with the duel on storylines that are most a time "outdated". Hon. Yaw Addo, who serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manso-Adubia constituency in the Ashanti Region, believes producers of Kumawood movies are yet to embrace modernisation.

In his view, the local movie industry will only grow when film makers begin to try new ways which are in line with 21st-century happenings.

"They need to move on and produce movies with contemporary ideas and storylines. But the contemporary issues being discussed today in movies is as good as when I was a little kid, where people are living in compound houses, village life, stories about witchcraft and these are the same old things they are doing in this 21st century."

The Manso-Adubia MP added that it was high time Kumawood movie makers must begin to aim as high as established industries like Hollywood, insisting such movie industries are where they are today because they reinvented themselves to suit the current trend.

According to him, adding a modernised twist to the storylines of Kumawood movies could just do the trick, as the local movie industry looks to make further waves.
