Members of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) last Tuesday paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture at his office at the State House in Accra.
In a speech, the President of MUSIGA, Alhaji Sidiku Buari, congratulated the minister on his appointment. He called on the government to help grow the music industry, since it is one that entertains everyone. The president thanked the government for passing the Copyright Law and appealed to the Attorney-General to help make it operational.
Alhaji Buari added that, since poverty was adversely affecting the business, Hon. S. K. Boafo as sector Minister could help solve the problem in his own way and also create an avenue for musicians to play at Ghana's 50th anniversary celebrations.
The minister, in response said when MUSIGA called to seek audience with him, it dawned on him that they would co-operate with his ministry in its bid to create wealth and reduce poverty among creative people.
He said he did not need to put more tears into their eyes through reference to the last days of Araba Stamp, adding that should not be allowed to happen again. He touched on the enormous contribution that musicians make to the enhancement of life, our cultural values and the economy of Ghana. He also urged artistes to work and live as a family.
Hon. Boafo advised the MUSIGA, the Copyright Society of Ghana (COSGA) and all other groups that deal with the promotion, development and presentation of our cultural products to develop a friendly attitude towards the public.
The minister wished MUSIGA well and stated that his ministry was ever ready to work with them to give the Ghana music industry a boost.
Musicians present at the meeting included Mzbel, FBS, Ex-Doe, VIP, Castro, Sidney, Kwabena Kwabena, Paapa Yankson, A. B. Crestsil, Ronny of Buk Bak, K. K. Kaboobo, King David, Ras Caleb, Jude Lomotey and Jewel Ackah.
