MUSIGA to settle elections case out of court

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has resolved to settle a case over their much-anticipated elections out of court.

Aspiring MUSIGA president, Ras Caleb Appiah Levi filed an application at the High Court in July to injunct the elections.

He raised concerns over a bloated register, missing names and registration of members after an agreed deadline.

Ras Caleb Appiah Levi who is seeking to win the MUSIGA presidency has agreed to a request to settle the case over the union’s elections out of court on condition the union satisfies all his demands.

“The things that we requested for MUSIGA to do for us to take the case out of the court, if MUSIGA does that, then on the 4th of December, the case will be taken out of court. I pray that they will do it because I want the case out so that members can be ready to go and vote,” Ras Caleb told 3news’ Owusu Worae in an interview.

After months of mediation led by the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr Ziblim Iddi Barri, MUSIGA has agreed to rectify the anomalies Ras Caleb pointed out in July.

The voters' register which originally had over 2,700 names has been cleaned, leaving a little over 700 names, Ras Caleb told Owusu Worae.

“This is the bloated register which is about 2,700, and this is the revised one which is 742, so I was not wrong. If I was wrong, we will not have this. This is what we have sent to the court that they have agreed to do whatever we asked them to do.”

He also said his call for a regional based voters’ register has been granted.

The new register is currently being exhibited to allow members verify their names.

The aspiring MUSIGA president sees the decision by the union to fix the anomalies he raised as a victory.

The parties are expected back in court on December 4.

Meanwhile, the National Executive Council of MUSIGA is yet to announce a date for the elections, but Ras Caleb is positive he would emerge victorious over his contender, Bessa Simons.
