When we first watched the newly furnished ‘Laugh a Minute’ on Viasat 1 some time back we were asking ourselves if the beautiful Madam Kpelems aka the husband beater was really a woman but to end our curiosity we realized it was a full grown man.
Immediately we realized that, we did everything possible to get hold of the two in one character Madam Kpelems whose input into the newly furnished Laugh a minute is having so much impact on society.
Derrick Kobina Bonney is his real name but known on the show as ‘Madam Kpelems is a graduate from the university of Legon, where he studied Agric hence the first question we asked was ‘so why comedy’ or ‘Kpelems’.
Madam Kpelems disclosed that, comedy has been a part of him ever since he was offering that course- Agric and once in a while he will host shows on Legon campus and outside campus as when they come to him.
The switch to Madam Kpelems was a result of the effect laugh a minute wanted to give its viewers in the new seasons and the main idea was to empower women, pouching holes in their negative lives for them to correct it, Madam Kpelems explained his role.
The only sexy husband beater also added that, many judged the character wrongly, before people said ‘Madam Kpelems’ if it is really a guy than he is ‘GAY’, others said the character was fueling men abuse, which to me they were all wrong, Eric Kobina Bonney aka Kpelems stressed.
In response to the frustrations of people especially Laugh a minute viewers, Kpelems revealed that, he is only trying to portray how horrible some women are in the country, hence when they watch the show they should be able to change immediately.
‘The responses to Madam Kpelems have been tremendous, from Facebook through to twitter, (where fans can follow @ twitter as madamkplelems & fb- real madamkplelems) and for the streets, we can’t complain but thank God for such a favor, Madam Kpelems noted.
Recently Madam Kpelems stunned a Junior High schools funfair as his name brought over 1000s of children together to celebrate their day out. Show organized by Tutelage Productions and event called Evasion of Fun Fair, saw the comedian take the children through a series of dance rehearsals plus rib cracking jokes.
So after all Madam Kpelems is not gay, he is not fuelling men abuse but rather championing women empowerment in the country by way of pointing out wrong doings among women.
