Accra, Nov. 10, GNA - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly, has been tasked to enact a bye-law that would make it an offence for the sale of alcoholic beverages in all lorry parks in the Metropolis. Alhaji Ali Kudzen, the Chairman of the Welfare Committee of the Tudu Lorry Park, who made the suggestion on Wednesday, said the law would check persistent public complaints of drunkenness among drivers. He was speaking at the maiden Best Driver award ceremony, organised by the Tudu branch of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) in Accra.

Alhaji Ali said the high rate of road accidents in Ghana could be attributed to non compliance of simple basic driving regulations. He advised drivers to be extra careful and avoid over speeding to ensure accident- free Christmas and New Year festivities. The Commander of the Motor, Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU), Chief Superintendent Victor Tandoh, advised the executives of the GPRTU, to collaborate with the Police in monitoring the professional conduct of drivers to minimise road accidents.

They should also examine driving licenses, insurance policies and other driving documents to ensure that they are valid. Alhaji Mustapha Garba, a former Commander of the MTTU, who chaired the function, advised the drivers to take into consideration the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

Mr Francis Klomey who was adjudged the over all best driver, received a television set and a certificate, while Mr Samuel Kwaku Davies who placed second, had a sound system and a certificate. Mr Emmanuel Foli who won the third position, received a bicycle and a certificate. 10 Nov. 04
