Make sure you keep our lights on - Energy Minister tells Asogli Power

The Minister for Energy, John Peter Amewu has charged the management of Sunon Asogli Power to do everything possible to ensure that there is regular supply of power to keep the economy running.

According to him, one of the priorities of President Akufo-Addo is to make sure that the lights are on because electricity is the backbone of the country's economy.

"The President wants the lights to be on so make sure that you do everything possible to keep the lights on," he stated.

He noted that the country has gone through difficult situation in the past as far as electricity supply is concerned and intimated that government is therefore seeking to ensure that there is consistent supply of power to ensure that there is economic growth.

The Minister who acknowledged the important role Sunon Asogli Power Plant and other independent power producers are playing in the power sector, said "we have decided to give you attention to know your challenges so that we can help to address them."

Mr John Peter Amewu made the call when he paid a working visit to Sunon Asogli Power at Kpone near Tema, to assess the progress of work on the ongoing gas storage facility there on Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

He explained that the facility when would receive gas delivery from Italy’s ENI which is processing gas f the Jubilee Fields in the Western Region for storage.

The gas station facility which can receive up to 60 mmscf of gas is expected to be completed in the next few months.

The Chief Executive Officer of Sunon Asogli Power Plant, Xi Xiaohai, who led the Minister and his entourage to tour the facility assured that the project would be completed as soon as possible.

The Energy Minister also visited the 350MW power plant owned by Cenpower, an independent power producing company.

The Chief Executive Officer of Cenpower Mr Theophilus Sackey after a brief presentation about the project which begun in 2015 conducted the Minister and his entourage round the facility.

Mr Amewu who expressed satisfaction about the state of work so far explained that the purpose of the visit was to get himself abreast with what they are doing and also to assist in addressing any challenge they may be facing with.

Mr Amewu also visited the Volta River Authority's Natural Gas Interconnection Facility and West African Gas Pipeline Company at Tema Newtown to end his visit.
