Ebenezer Addy a driver who had been remanded in prison custody at the Nungua Police Station pending investigations into a crime committed has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour for breaking the cell wall in an attempt to escape lawful custody.
He was relieved of the first count of attempting to escape lawful custody but was found guilty of causing unlawful damage.
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector J.K. Adu told a Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Imoru Ziblim that the accused was remanded in police custody by the Circuit Court after committing a crime to assist the police in their investigations to arrest the other accomplices.
He said the police officer on duty that day heard an unusual noise from the cell at about 11pm. In attempt to find out what was happening he found the top of the cell wall broken and a broken frame lying on the floor.
Investigations revealed that the accused person used the frame to hit the wall and succeeded in breaking it from inside in order to escape from prison custody.
He was charged with the offence and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment with hard labour.
The accused in his explanation denied the allegations levelled against and said he found a wooden frame supporting a wall in the cell and when he took the frame away he saw that the wall was broken.
