Man jailed five years for snatching tourist bag.

Sekondi, April 26, GNA - A Sekondi circuit court on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old Anthony Askwa to five years imprisonment in hard labour for stealing.

He pleaded guilty.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Alex Cosmos told the court, presided over by Mr. Alex Owusu-Ofori that on March 28 this year, the complaint Mr. Brian P. Woodgate, a British National who is on holidays, was strolling along the beach at Princess Town, when the accused and one Cobby now at large, snatched a bag he was holding from him.

Inspector Cosmos said the bag contained Mr. Woodgate's passport, 1.1 million cedis, 60 Euros, 30 Pounds sterling, 588 United States Dollars, a travellers cheque, two credit cards, compass torch light, an Olympus camera with films and an air ticket.

The prosecutor said the complainant after the incident, informed the owner of the guesthouse he was lodging and a search party was organised. He said the accused was arrested the following day around River Nyani near Abura, where some of the items were found.
