Two persons have allegedly sliced open the scrotum of a 24-year-old man, David Ekow Bray, at Atua in the Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region. The horrifying incident occurred on June 12, 2007 at about 10.00pm. The assailants have been identified as Jonathan Aryeetey (a.k.a. Sparrow) and Ebenezer Tetteh (a.k.a. Ogidigidi), both residents of Atua.
According to information gathered from residents, the victim, on that day had a call from a friend, asking him to come over for a mobile phone charger he had lent to him earlier.
While at his friend’s place, two hefty men believed to be in their forties attacked him in the dark. They pinned him to the ground, tore off his trousers and with the dexterity of butchers slashed his testicles and part of his penis. The victim however managed to engage his assailants in a ‘fight for dear life’, escaping death by a hair’s breadth.
A medical report signed by Dr. Daniel Kyei-Baffuor of the Atua Government Hospital indicated that Master Bray, who was stretchered there in a critical state, had bled profusely and suffered from deep lacerations of the left scrotum, with exposed testis, contusions on chest, neck and waist, and an abrasion on his right elbow. The report said several stitches had to be performed to prevent his testicles from gushing out.
While residents are yet to come to terms with the reasons behind the gruesome attack, they are even more shocked that four long months after the assailants were identified, the Odumase-Krobo Police, to whom the attempted murder was reported, are still looking on while the suspects move about freely.
Interestingly, not even a directive from the Director-General of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS), Mr. (COP) Ashley, could prod the Akropong Divisional Command to prefer any criminal charges against the suspects. DAILY GUIDE has gathered from inside sources at Koforidua that an initial police docket on the case has vanished into thin air. The chilling development prompted the PIPS unit from the Police Headquarters in Accra to wade into the matter.
Subsequently, David Ekow Bray, a former student of the Ghana Maritime Academy, has accused the Odumase-Krobo Police of conniving with the suspected criminals. He therefore appealed to the Minister of the Interior to compel the Police at Odumase-Krobo to arrest and prosecute all those behind the attempt on his life.
According to the petitioner, he had no option but to solicit the assistance of the ministry because the local police had failed to assist him in his pursuit for justice.
His petition, dated September 10, 2007 and copied to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and other relevant organisations, including the media, noted that after the 12th June, 2007 attack on his life was reported, the Police took sides with the assailants because they were rich people.
“Sir, the Odumase Police mishandled the case, and realizing that the culprits were well-known businessmen of the town, started ‘coaching them’ as to what, where and how to counteract against me, the complainant, (sic) and refused to arrest them.
Rather they filed false documents in the docket indicating that the culprits were arrested and given bail, but it was never true,” he said. He said even though he identified the suspects and reported them to the Police, nothing was done in terms of effecting their arrest.
Master Bray said when the case was reported to the Divisional Police Command at Akropong, it was given even worse treatment, to the extent that one Inspector Ballah allegedly hit him on his back for reporting the matter to the Police Headquarters, forcing him to visit the hospital once more.
Dr. Jany Garcia, also of Atua Government Hospital, treated the young man after PIPS had given him a medical form. As at the time of filing the story, the victim, who was on medication, said he was still having problems with his manhood, and could not walk properly.
“I wish to state that ever since I had this injury, I have not been myself. I am not physically fit because of my manhood, which is still on medication,” he told the Interior Minister in his petition. This prompted his mother, Madam Martha Bervel, to petition the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
But to her surprise, even after the Police Headquarters had ordered that the case be sent to court, the docket on the case vanished into thin air.
DAILY GUIDE has gathered that the matter is being handled with all seriousness, following investigations conducted by PIPS.
