A Tema Circuit Court "B" presided over by Mr Stephen Teye on Friday heard how a watchman who was smoking leaves suspected to be marijuana, chewed and swallowed the substance later swam in the muddy Chemu Lagoon at Tema Manhean on seeing the police.
However, luck was not on the side of Ebenezer Bortey, as the police, assisted by passers-by also swam in the mud and apprehended him.
Bortey, together with an accomplice, Divine Amartey, were charged for possessing "Indian Hemp" and were remanded in custody to re-appear on March seven. Their plea was not taken.
Inspector Bernard Agbedanu stated that on February 22, two detective police officers went to Abonkor, a suburb of Tema Manhean, to investigate a case.
While in a house, they smelt Indian hemp fumes and traced the scent to a corner where the accused were smoking the stuff. On seeing the police, Bortey quickly chewed and swallowed the stuff in a bid to outsmart the police, the court heard.
Insp. Agbedanu said the detectives later searched the room of the suspects and found quantities of the hemp on a table and under their bed.
While they were being escorted to the police, Bortey ran into the muddy Chemu Lagoon but was later apprehended.
