Medical Assistant remanded for illegal abortion

Agona Swedru, May 14, GNA - A Magistrate's Court at Agona Swedru has remanded a Medical Assistant of the Saint Joseph Clinic at Swedru for illegal abortion. Isaac Kofi Sam, whose plea was not taken, was alleged to have caused an illegal abortion leading to the death of Esi Anoobilwah, 18, from Gomoa Akropong Number One.

The accused would reappear in court on June 7, 2004. Prosecuting, Detective Sergeant R. A. Boamah told the court presided over by Mr Yakubu Fatawo that the deceased lived together with her boyfriend Stephen Safo at Gomoa Akropong Number One. According to Detective Sgt. Boamah, the deceased became pregnant and she asked the boyfriend to find a way to abort the pregnancy. He said the deceased and the boyfriend went to Agona Swedru to the Saint Joseph Clinic where they met the accused person who agreed to abort the pregnancy.

The prosecution said the accused took them to his house and carried out the abortion, adding that immediately after the act the deceased started bleeding profusely. He told the court that the Medical Assistant called his house boy named Joe and directed him to lead the deceased and the boyfriend to Breman Asikuma Catholic Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Boamah said at the Breman Asikuma Hospital, while the medical attendants were taking her to the theatre Esi Annobilwah died and the boyfriend bolted. The matter was reported to Breman Asikuma police. He said the Breman Asikuma police traced the accused person and arrested him and handed him to Swedru police. The case was still under investigations.
