Recently, there have been calls for the youth to refrain from using social media platforms for negative ventures. However Alberta Dosu’s story is a testimony of how the youth can capitalise on the positive side of social media to achieve their dreams.

Alberta, a graduate in Journalism from the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) decided to follow her passion after her national service at the Royal Bank and working shortly on contract at Uni Bank. She decided to move into creative fashion designing, to the surprise of her family.

In 2015, she was adjudged the “the most fashionable student” in the 2015 year group at GIJ, although she had no skill in sewing.

With GH?1,500 saved from her National Service stipend, she had home-tuition in sewing from her mother and managed to re-open her mother’s sewing shop and expanded it.

Alberta named her shop Mzbeckyz Fashion after her mother.

Little by little, she began to build her client base. She started with her friends from National Service and gradually word went round about her works.

She has, since employed three other designers to assist her, while her mother serves as an advisor. She advertised her wares on social media, through which she has customer base not only in Ghana but in Nigeria, Germany, United States of America, United Kingdom, Brazil and Finland.

“Customers of Mzbeckyz Fashion are mainly through social media advertisement” Alberta stressed on how social media could be utilised positively.

Alberta not only produces all styles for male, female and children’s wear but, clutch purses, bags, phone cases, cushion pillows, side tables, pattern designing, curtains, bed sheets, comforters all designed with African prints.

Alberta produces with African print because she wants to project Ghanaian fashion worldwide in order to erase the crave for western made products.

She encouraged women with low capital to be strategic to help break into the market. “They must use social media to market their products.”

Alberta, who has been nominated for the 2017 Young Startup Female Entrepreneur Awards, advised the youth to be hardworking and focused and use social media wisely to help develop their potentials needed for national development.
