Unlike most Ghanaian children who have to deal with their parents saying no to a career in creative arts, model, presenter and event host Edma Ohemaa Lawer had all the support and encouragement she needed.

“Very supportive. I wouldn’t be where I am without them,” she says.

Growing up, Ohemaa wanted to be a model because of her love for the camera but at age eighteen, she discovered a new passion in presenting.

Three years in the field and she has already hosted Project Walkway Ghana, Ghana Movie Awards, Ghana Rocks concert, Fashion Mist and Miss Africa Queen in Switzerland which she says is the most memorable moment in her hosting career.

She has also interviewed the likes of D Black, Jason Boateng, Nana Afua Antwi, Joey B, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) and other known figures.

In 2011, she participated and placed third in Miss Ghana UK beauty pageant. “It gave me the platform I needed to push forward and achieve certain thing I wouldn’t have achieved if I didn’t participate in the pageant.

“To God be the glory I came third and I used my title to achieve what I wanted to achieve. There’s nothing more special than being an ambassador for your country.”

To get better at her job, Ohemaa practices in front of her mirror and also watches talk show hosts Oprah Winfrey and Piers Morgan.

Ohemaa has some words of advice for aspiring presenters: “my advice would be to never give up. Be consistent and it’s a very competitive industry so make sure you are always on top of your game.”

“Brand yourself well and stay positive and professional. But always remember to be and stay humble.”

She currently lives in London and studying Oil and Gas Management at Greenwich University.
