A member of the FOKN Bois, Mensa Ansah has expressed his disgust at fellow Ghanaian artistes who record songs and release on the internet with adjectives like, “it’s a hit track” and “club banger”.
In his view, a new song which is being released on the internet hasn’t received any airplay yet, much less talk of it gaining popularity and becoming a hit.
The "Tea Bread" hit singer said this on his twitter page today.
This trend of song hyping has been going on for some time now in the music industry in Ghana and arguably, in several parts of the world. In recent times past, musicians only record their singles on CDs and refer to them as promo CDs and then distribute to radio disc jockeys as well as presenters to play.
Now, the practice is fast fading out due to the ever increasing vibrancy of social media where musicians, managers and publicists will whatsapp, email, tweet and broadcast new songs to cronies in the media so they could receive airplay and become popular. They sometimes upload the songs on the internet and send the link for friends in the media for the song to be downloaded; in the word or text content which is normally attached to the website link to the song and sent out, musicians or managers and publicists hype the songs with ridiculous adjectives even though they are yet to be played on air and assessed by listeners.
It’s this behavioral pattern that triggered the comment from the hitherto, member of the Lifeline Family.
Mensa tweeted:
How you gonna release a song on the Internet and before anyone hears it you're calling it "classic" "new club banger"? we gyimi?
