Moliy explains why she denied Shaggy use of 'Shake It To The Max' riddim

Ghanaian singer Moliy has addressed why Jamaican Dancehall legend Shaggy was not granted clearance to use the riddim of her hit song ‘Shake It To The Max.’

Earlier, after being denied use of the song, Shaggy stated that Moliy might not fully understand the Jamaican culture of artistes “riding” on existing riddims.

However, in an interview with the UK’s Capital Xtra on March 24, 2026, Moliy clarified that her decision was not due to a lack of understanding of the culture, but rather to a different creative direction for the record.

“I understand the culture, I just had a different intention. It’s like you can see it from where we are standing today and be like, ‘No, this went totally wrong, this is not how it’s supposed to be.’ Maybe we will look at it 10 years from now and be like, ‘This was actually a great choice," Moliy said.

She went on to question whether Shaggy’s interest was genuinely in her as an artiste or solely in the song, stating that a different collaboration could still be possible if the connection were authentic.

“If you really mess with me, then hit me up and let’s work on something else. Is it just ‘Shake It to the Max’ you’re interested in, or do you like me as an artiste?” she questioned.

Moliy’s comments come after Shaggy, a legendary figure in Reggae and Dancehall, accused her of declining to grant permission for other artistes to use the riddim of her global hit song.

Speaking with journalist Anthony Miller at the Island Music Conference in February 2026, Shaggy disclosed that he, alongside Sean Paul, had recorded songs over the “Shake It To The Max” riddim but were unable to secure clearance from Moliy.
