Media personality and entertainment pundit Amanda Jissih has voiced her concerns regarding the increasing trend of cross-dressing among content creators on social media.
Speaking on United Showbiz on UTV on September 7, 2024, Jissih claimed that many cross-dressers are involved in LGBT+ practices and use cross-dressing as a cover-up.
Jissih explained that while these individuals may appear to be cross-dressing solely for content creation, they are often engaging in LGBT+ activities behind the scenes.
“Most of these cross-dressers are actually involved in LGBT+ practices. They are just using the cross-dressing to cover up.
“So you may see them and they are just doing it for content but they are practicing homosexuality. They are just using this content to cover up,” she said.
She distinguished cross-dressers from effeminate gay men, known locally as ‘Kojo Besia,’ stating that the latter are openly attracted to men, whereas cross-dressers use their attire to conceal their true sexual orientation.
“They are even different from the ‘Kojo Besia’ (Effeminate gay men), at least with them, you would know they are sexually attracted to men.
“But for the cross-dressers, most of them are not bold enough to be open about their sexuality, so they are covering the practice with the cross-dressing,” she claimed.
Her comments were made in response to concerns raised by the National Commission for Culture (NCC) about the rising cases of cross-dressing among social media content creators.
This concern was heightened by the recently held “All-black party” event in Kumasi where several male influencers attended in women's clothing.
Dr. Richardson Commey Fio, Deputy Executive Director of the NCC, described the trend as "disturbing" and "totally unacceptable," especially in a city known for its rich cultural heritage.
