Accra, Sept. 30, GNA - Ms Elisabeth Ohene, Minister of State in Charge of Tertiary Education, on Monday urged local entrepreneurs to develop the interest in publishing magazines that highlight the positive exploits of Ghanaians rather than depend on foreign magazines which report such issues from their own perspectives. She said although publishing was a daunting task, especially considering the huge financial outlay, there was still the need for people to develop the interest to ensure that Ghanaians were able to "tell the story their own way."
Ms Ohene was speaking at the launch of a new monthly magazine "Mothers and Daughters," a Ghanaian oriented women's only magazine. The publication aims to highlight the true-life stories of successful women to serve as role models for the youth. She urged the publishers to use good and elegant language and research their stories properly before publication in order to attract more readership. They should not only focus on successful women who are already in the public view, but also highlight some commendable activities among unknown women, especially those in the rural areas.
Ms Mina Agyemang, Editor, said the publication would focus on outstanding Ghanaian women, working mothers, professionals as well as queen mothers. In playing this role, she said the magazine would strive to steer clear of politics, although much effort would be expended on real life issues of food, clothing, shelter, diseases and illiteracy. "Our aim is to produce a magazine rich with information and entertainment, so that every reader will want to possess a copy," she said. The first copy of the magazine was auctioned for 600,000 cedis.
