The journey to stardom has not been an easy one for Walter Mawuli Gli, known in showbiz circles as Mr Bacteria. Through thin and thick, the young man has eventually released his debut album titled Asem.
He was first introduced to hiplife by the hiplife duo Nkasei who featured him on their debut. Bacteria said he was very close to the duo and so when the opportunity brought itself, he grabbed it without hesitation, “ Naakay and Shyy saw some potential in me and they did not regret featuring me.”
That was probably the beginning of greater things to happen in the life of Bacteria who says Nkasei introduced him to Lucky Mensah. Luck was not on his side when a rap he did on Lucky’s Me Ne Wo Nni Asem faded after production. “By the time the song was ready, the engineer realised that my rap bit had faded and nothing could be done about it.”
Determined as he was, Bacteria did not give up after that incident. He still hung out with Lucky Mensah who was kind enough to introduce him to his producer, K. Boadu of West Kay.
Since Bacteria was still “fresh”, K. Boadu offered to help him on condition that he(Bacteria) will do a kind of collaboration with Lucky Mensah and that did pay off. The result of that collaboration were songs like Brofre Nie, Maame, Obi Dihyie and Naa Densua.
“That brought me to the limelight and since then there’s been no turning back for me as we did lots of performances,” said the cool and collected gentleman.
Early this year, Bacteria managed to release his debut and in his own words, “it is not doing so badly but I hope it picks up.”
Produced by Odwenanomaa Records, the album has eight songs on cassette. The executive producer is Asberk for Odwenanomaa Records. Bacteria featured K. K. Fosu, Okomhyefour and Pinochio.
Bacteria who is known for his ragga style changes style in Me Frefrewo. He does this in the highlife vein. It is his plea to his lover, Adwoa to come to him. The song is full of sweet words, those that stand a good chance of luring anyone.
He does a remix of his popular Maame, a song which is dedicated to all mothers for what they go through to bring up their children. Frankly this is one good song that succeeds in paying tribute to mothers. Other songs on the album are Agyeiwaa, Dede, Benz and Agye Owuo.
Bacteria believes that collaborations with international artistes is a sure way of selling Ghanaian music internationally, one thing he is considering doing in future.
The people he admires in the industry happen to be those whose style he follows — Batman, Bandana, Borax and the late Terry Bonchaka. He says they are known as the B-Squad.
Bacteria says he is between 20 and 25 years. His father is from Adidome in the Volta Region while his mother comes from Kwahu Pepease. He is currently in the studios and hopes to come out with his second album next year.
