The Northern Regional Chairman of the Musicians' Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Mr. Delali Alomenu, has appealed to Ghanaian Musicians to showcase African traditional culture in their music and performances.
According to the MUSIGA Chairman, musicians have a great challenge in promoting and sustaining the image, traditions and rich cultures of Africa. Mr. Alomenu was speaking at a Gospel Exploration festival at the Centre for National Culture in Tamale as part of regional activities marking Ghana's 50th independence anniversary celebrations.
The programme, which attracted various Musicians, Artistes and Singing groups from a host of Churches in the Tamale Metropolis, was highly patronised by other high dignitaries who danced to the glory of God. Alomenu noted that, the music industry was one of the biggest industries in the world today and indeed in Africa.
He however lamented that lack of appropriate cultural development strategies and funding had undermined human and institutional capacity to fully exploit the cultural potentials in Africa through music.
He enumerated some of the problems facing musicians in Ghana.
He said that, musicians were usually not given the requisite recognition and respect in most African countries.
And to break the camel's back, musicians and other artistes in the industry lacked a strong, effective and vibrant body to champion their cause.
Mr. Alomenu also cried over the infiltration of western culture into the country's moral fibre saying "many of our budding musicians have perfected the art of copying and have become copycats; they expend all their energies trying to sound like Michael Jackson, 50 Cent, Jay Zee, Beyonce and the like.
The Chairman called for a boost in the industry as the country celebrates its Golden Jubilee and for all to remember that a musician composed the National Anthem.
The programme featured the SDA Acapella singers, Christian Youth Builders-EP Church , Joyful singers- Bethany Church, Apostle Continuations Choir, Revelation singers, Redemption singers, and Pastor Zack; among others.
