Esther Smith is a gospel musician
Esther Smith has revealed her break from music happened accidentally.
“I did not intend to go on a break but some situations forced me to,” she said.
She was on Class Drive on Class 91.3 FM, speaking to Mr Lion.
“My child had a heart condition, so I had to leave this country for Germany because of the doctors and all,” the celebrated singer-songwriter said.
She explained this moment in her life “placed a huge demand for my time in Germany.”
Esther Smith said, “While I was there, I was still doing music. I joined a German choir. When I moved to England, I joined the Church of England and its choir.”
“I know my divine assignment is to sing Gospel so wherever I find myself, I sing. It comes with ease. I have not decided to stop. I will do it till I am called to rest by God,” she assured her fans.
According to the Gospel music legend, one of the unforgettable moments of her career was when she came from Germany to play a gig in Cote d’Ivoire.
“This was [circa] 2008,” she noted.
Arriving at the airport, she was blown away to hear the title track of her 2009 album, M’aye Nhyira, playing.
“I was received as though I was a president,” she remarked, adding she was even more overwhelmed when the Francophone audience sang her Akan/Twi songs.
She recalled similar warm receptions in the United States of America (USA).
Esther Smith said her debut album of 2000 “Gye No Di gave me public notice,” while her sophomore 2002 Onyame Boafuo containing “Ma W’onsan gave me money”.
Onyame Boafuo sold like hot cake. She explained: “We would cut 50,000 copies and in less than two weeks, it would be sold off. It was also a record-making chart-topper. It was a great hit. God did great things.”
The UK-based artiste has been away from her home country Ghana for 10 years. Her return has been marked with a concert in Kumasi and on Friday, August 30, an Accra version will happen at the Bishop Agyin Asare-led Perez Dome Chapel, Dzorwulu.
