My cowries are not for spiritual protection - Nana Yaa

Though she is not new to the Ghanaian music scene, Nana Yaa’s love for cowries is what makes her stand out of the lot.

She uses them as earrings, belts, beads and others.

It is perceived that there are some spiritual tidings attributed to the use of cowries or wearing them. Others also think they are for protection against demonic attacks but Nana Yaa says she is not perturbed about such stereotypes.

According to her, there is nothing spiritual about the cowries she is fond of wearing.

“There is nothing spiritual about the cowries I wear. I love them because, they are beautiful and you can use them for a lot of things. Moreover, it’s African.

“I mean in the olden days, cowries represented money, the more you had, the more powerful you are seen because, it shows you had alot of money,” she said in an interview with livefmghana.com.

In a response to what she thinks about people who might mistake her love for cowries to be something barbaric, she said; “ I do not care, I am not bothered at all. In everything, there is a good and a bad side and the fact that some people will use it for something negative does not mean, I am also like that.”
