DRIVERS TO BE RENDERED JOBLESS

...Metro Mass Transit to Take-Over Loading From Kasoa to Accra

Commercial drivers plying the Kasoa-Accra route are to be victimized by the NPP government following reports that they campaigned heavily against the government. This revenge mission is to roll out with the firm decision to flood the Kasoa area with the Metro Mass Transit buses, allowing them to use the loading terminal currently being used by the 'Tro-tro' buses.

According to the sources at the Transport Ministry, the Metro Mass Transit buses are to be given priority thereby rendering the mini-buses redundant. The decision to give preference to the 'Kufuor buses', the True Democrat has been told is to punish the drivers for displaying NDC paraphernalia in their vehicles and on their vehicles. The drivers have also been accused of campaigning vigorously for the NDC. With the Metro Mass buses all adorned with Akufo-Addo's posters, the NPP thinks it would help convert some of the voters to their side before the run-off.

With the NPP desperate to cling to political power, the move to victimize the commercial drivers in the Kasoa area is likely to be replicated across the length and breadth of the country. Already, there have been pent-up feelings among commercial drivers against the NPP government for its capricious use of political power to deny them their right to livelihood. This denial, the sources argued is traceable to the imposition of Metro Mass Transit buses on the people, more particularly the preference given to them to 'load' before the commercial drivers are allowed to carry the remaining passengers.

The sources maintained that at various 'loading points' in the country, the commercial drivers get the opportunity to carry passengers at their stations, only if the Metro Mass buses are not available. The situation is going to be exacerbated with the new policy initiative by the NPP to allow the priority 'loading' by the 'Kufuor buses' at GPRTU designated stations meant for commercial drivers.

Explaining the decision to put more 'Kufuor buses' on the Kasoa route, the Transport Ministry source revealed that their calculation is that with more of the buses adorned with Akufo-Addo's posters the impact of the Tro-tro drivers could be minimized. He, however, expressed fears of reprisals from the commercial drivers if care is not taken in implementing this absurdity just for the sake of retaining political power.

When asked whether the government is not aware of the right of every Ghanaian including commercial drivers to eke-out a living, the source said “political expediency has no room for the welfare of the people”. In his view, the NPP is intoxicated with power and wants to cling to it at all possible cost and therefore care less about the consequences of its actions. The source argued that the recent reduction in the price of fuel and massive decrease in the transport fares of Metro Mass buses all points to one thing- to try and hoodwink the electorate to retain the NPP in power.

The source claimed the knee-jerk approach being adopted by the NPP to win the run-off is likely to back-fire and lead to reprisals against the drivers of these Metro Mass buses being used by the government to attain their diabolical objective. With the Kasoa-Accra route targeted by the NPP, the reactions are likely to resonate loudly and strongly, and the commercial drivers who see the NPP as a safe home could start revising their notes.
