Najo Causes Mass Hysteria In Liberia

FBS and Obour were the only Ghanaians among other international artistes to perform at the peace concert, organized by the UN in Liberia, prior to the country?s landmark elections last year.

This year, during the Easter season, Najo of FBS was invited to perform there.

According to Najo, he could not resist the offer because ?I saw it as my own small way of contributing to maintaining the peace in that country through my music, because I promised my Liberian fans I was going to return if the peace was kept, and so far I think it has been.?

Relishing the success of his previous performance in Liberia, Najo disclosed, ?it was the biggest crowd Ihad ever performed for, and sharing the stage with African celebrities like Congo?s ace musician, Kofi Olumide, and Nigerian actors, Genevieve Nnaji and Ramsey Nuoah was exciting for me.?

?Sitting at the same table at the press conference for the concert with the immediate past UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan was indeed humbling,? he added.

Najo, a one-time member of the sensational hip-life group, FBS, has as well revealed that contrary to speculations that there was enmity between him and his two other colleagues who constituted the rap group, they got along very well.

Najo said this in an exclusive interview at his residence
in Accra, where he talked also about his entrance into the music industry and his new solo album, which is enjoying impressive airplay in the country currently.

?I left the country for the UK and on my return, realised the other two members of FBS had released an album without me. As a professional musician brimming with ideas, I figured doing a solo project too would not be that bad, so that is exactly what I did,? said Najo.

The artiste said he found it surprising therefore that rumors were making the rounds that he was at loggerheads with his two colleagues who were, in fact, his real cousins, with whom he enjoyed his first success when their debut album, oluman boogie, featuring TINNY, became a mega hit.

Brushing aside the controversy, Najo disclosed that he got into showbiz first as a dancer with his two cousins back in the mid-1990s, with their first stage performance being at the national theatre on the youth talent show, Fun World.

?Back then, we were
imitating dance moves of Michael Jackson and MC Hammer among others, and it was later on that I proposed the idea of singing, since these foreign artistes we looked up to did well both at music and dance,? he disclosed.

It was there that FBS took to music, and on the heels of about a decade, that decision resulted in the release of their hit album, oluman boogie in 2005, as well as a performance alongside ace Ghanaian comedian, KSM, in the premiering of the KSM at 50 show to celebrate Ghana?s 50th anniversary. Since then,
it has been a forward march to success for Najo and FBS.

Talking about his new solo project, Habib Abass Najo said the 12 tracks on CD (8 tracks on cassette), released barely four months ago, coincided with the launch of his website ww.najoonline.com.

The album which is distributed by Big Ben Music Productions is titled ?Me Suro? and features musicians like Screw Face, Reggie Zippie, Oboy David, MzBel and Nayanka.
