Acting Director of the National Folklore Board, Nana Adjoa Adobea interacts with Agya Koo Nimo
The National Folklore Board, led by the Acting Director Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante, has paid a courtesy call to the legendary Palm wine music artist Daniel Kwabena Boa Amponsah ( Agya Koo Nimo) at his residence in Kumasi, Ayeduase.
The visit was to pay homage to the award-winning guitarist and interact with him about the resurrection of folklore music in the country.
Agya Nimo as he is popularly known is currently a lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technolgy. He welcomed the visitors and also thanked them for the recognition.
Being a president of the Musicians' Union of Ghana ( MUSIGA) for a decade, Agya Nimo expressed his concern about the neglect of culture and proverbs in the current trend of music in the country.
Agya Koo Nimo bemoaned the abandonment of the local languages in songs of today, criticising how foreign languages like pidgin are used instead. He also talked about the growing trend of indecency in the style of dressings of artistes.
"Watching or listening to music now saddens me because of how we have neglected our own customs and culture, we have a decided to adopt foreign culture, what happens to the dressing which used to act as a communication tool for our peoples, where is the proverbs we used to spice our music with in the past?" he asked.
"We are lagging behind, our own will always be our own. You can imitate someone but there will always be something missing in the imitation. Doing your own thing is the best," he advised.
Agya Nimo, who has won many accolades at both international and local levels, also revealed his plans of establishing a museum to create a lasting memory for the next generation.
He also called on the youth to make more use of the local proverbs in their music as it added some sense of humour and aroused the interest of the listeners.
Acting Director of the National Folklore Board stood on behalf of the board and thanked Agya Nimo for his good works in the creative art industry, and also stated their readiness to support him on his plan to establish a museum for the next generation.
She also acknowledged the effort the president of the land Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo and the creative art ministry led by Catherine Afuku for their efforts to see the resurrection of the creative art in the country.
His awards and honours include;
In February 1991, He received the prestigious Asanteman award from Asantehene, in that same year he received the Flagstar award from Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana. (ECRAG). He also had the invitation to serve on the National Folklore Board of trustees.
In March 1997, He was one of 40 Ghanaians who were awarded Gold medals on the Ruby Anniversary of Ghana’s independence.
