The National Theatre of Ghana in collaboration with US-based El Wah Movement Dance Theatre is set to premiere ‘Alkebulan Awakening’, a post contemporary dance production created to reflect on slavery in the colonial era.

Set to be premiered of the 22 and 23 of September 2017 at the National Theatre in Accra, This dance production incorporates multimedia elements along with oral tradition based art form.

Alkebulan’s Awakening tells a story of an African heroine who journeys to America, and the challenges she must overcome.

Her major obstacle is realizing her own worth in the world of patriarchy and racism and how she must discover her rightful place in the world.

Drawing attention to the epic atrocity of the transatlantic slave trades as an abomination against humanity, Alkebulan’s Awakening juxtaposes deep beauty with negative effects of the middle passage addressing topics of mental liberation, ancestral knowledge, and the beautiful African spirit and its global manifestation.
