A Nigerian video director, Michael, known professionally as Choppenson, has accused Ghanaian dancehall artiste Shatta Wale of refusing to pay for work done.
In a video message posted on YouTube, Choppenson claimed he had worked on about 13 of the artiste's music videos, including hits like 'Taking Over' and 'Ayoo', which garnered international attention and led to a collaboration with Beyoncé.
Choppenson recounted being promised payment for his services, only to be left uncompensated even after following Shatta Wale to Tamale for additional video shoots.
Despite assurances from both Shatta Wale and his manager, the director claims he has yet to receive his due, amounting to more than GH¢50,000.
“I did my quotation, and I called him, ‘Bro, I've done all my calculations. Getting crew, and my camera equipment in general. My fee will be 30,000 cedis.
"He said, ‘Oh, it's a little money'. He will give me 50k. Plus, he will even buy me a car," he narrated.
He continued "I was happy. I said, 'Okay, fine.' My parents just sent me my school fees from Nigeria and part of my rent. I gathered everything. Rented equipment. Put my crew together. I shot this video for Wale. He said, ‘Don't worry, I will give you your money’. I left.
"On day one, I didn't see my money. On day two, I didn't see my money. The next day, he didn't pick up my calls. The next day, I went to his house. They refused me from seeing him."
He added that he has yet to see any financial return from Shatta Wale and questioned why he was treated in such a manner.
“I did all this video for you, and yet you treat me like this. You need to see how Wale talked to me on set.
“I have worked with Ghanaian artistes. Plenty of them. They are amazing people. I just keep myself calm. I just do my thing. I don't look for trouble,” he said.
