That Becky Bonny has blossomed into a very fine musician does not come as a surprise to her and all those who have watched her grow up.
The 30-year old pretty songstress with an amazing voice started singing in church when she was only eight years old. She recalls receiving deafening applause anytime she had the opportunity to display her God-talent talent.
Though she sang so many times as a child, it was not until age 17 that Becky had a stint with professional music. "My younger brother Jack Hanison introduced me to Mary Ghansah whom I backed a lot in churches and at other engagements", she said.
Becky told Showbiz that Mary Ghansah encouraged her to take music seriously having seen the potential in her. Somehow, Becky says she ended up at a cake decoration school which meant a break from music a while.
As the good books says, God makes all things beautifully in His time so after that long break and immense support from her husband Jojo Bonney, himself a musician and guitarist, Becky launched her debut album on December 18 last year at the Grace Baptist Church where she fellowships.
Jojo's voice can be heard in most of the songs as a backing vocalist and in some instances as the lead vocalist. 'Oguanhwefo' is the title of the album which has twelve soul inspiring songs 'Me Ni Da Woso', a worship piece beautifully opens the album. It is Jojo's voice that one hears in this song with Becky's backing.
What the lyrics say in this songs is, "My hope is in the Lord the good shepherd who has promised never to fail. Very appropriate words for the downhearted".
In honouring and adoring the maker, Becky sings "Wo Ye Kronkron", meaning "You are Holy", her choice of words are apt as she exalts her maker.
Often times, it gets so irritating when musicians settle for already known songs and make a mess of them but not Becky who has treated such songs so well that the listener is forced to sing along and play it over and over.
One such song is 'Oguanhwefo' which is often heard at Christmas. This is a sweet medley which flows into another popular one Adenti, which asks, "why won't I praise you when I see all the beautiful works of your hands".
"Jesus is the way, the truth and the light" is the message in the 'Ono Ni Kwan No'. Being a highlife piece, the pace is faster than the preceding songs.
'Sugu Ne So' 'Me Mpa Me Ho', 'Mu Hwe No', 'manu Ntumi Nka', 'Father in Heaven' and 'Bra Be So No Hwe' (instrumental) can all be heard on the album that stands a good chance of rubbing shoulders with works of gospel gurus in the country.
