The Okotobrigya Cultural Troupe enchanted a capacity crowd at the Alliance Fran?aise in Accra with Zulu, a twenty-five minute dance piece choreographed by Isaac Della Avorka.
The group exhibited great professionalism with expressive body movements that blended with amazing ease.
Spurred on by intriguing African drumming and songs, the Zulu performers displayed dance forms that were characterised by vigorous and subtle movements and constant swaying of hands that bore long wooden swords.
With costumes fashioned out of colourful woollen carpets and African prints, the Okotobrigya dancers let themselves go and allowed delicate movements to take over as they moved in spirals and called for peace through songs and dance.
Earlier, the group thrilled the audience with a number of traditional music and dance pieces with their own variations, including Fontonfrom, Bima, Kadodo, Agbekor, Adzifo and Akyia.
Formed a couple of years ago, the Okotobrigya Cultural Troupe has performed to cheering audiences in several parts of Ghana. In 2001, some of their members participated in the World Children’s Festival, a multi-cultural programme held in The Netherlands.
In December 2002, they teamed up with other groups to win the first Yosakoi Dance Competition organised by the Japanese Embassy in Accra and the Japan Foundation. The Zulu was sponsored by the Alliance Fran?aise and the French Embassy in Accra.
