Highlife Musician, Okyeame Kwame has stated that the “Akyeme” music group which was formed by himself and his then partner Okyeame Quophi, had their breakthrough after an opportunity to perform at a Miss Ghana event in 1996.
According to the Made in Ghana Ambassador, he had been an underground artist for five years until he got the chance to perform on a Miss Ghana stage.
“In 1996, Okyeame Quophi and I had the first opportunity to perform at the Embassy Double Do and we got the opportunity through Pikus Laryea. I had been an underground artist for five years until I had the opportunity to perform at Miss Ghana. Okraku Mantey drove to Kumasi to come and sign Akyeame and before he got there, another person in Kumasi had already decided to invest in us because we had been seen to be associated with Miss Ghana. So Okyeame Quophi and I became Akyeame through this very platform,” he stated.
Speaking at the launch of this year’s edition of Miss Ghana, he added that the initiative has since helped groom several other artists including contestants who are also unable to win ultimate prizes.
“It isn’t just me. All the talents since Nkrumah’s time have passed through this platform. Even some of the beautiful women who didn’t win had the opportunity to experience grooming through this partnership,” he said
Okyeame Kwame together with Okyeame Quophi formed the music group “Akyeame” which took hiplife music by storm when they collaborated in the ’90s with some hit tracks until the duo decided to go their separate ways.
