Kumasi, Aug 18, GNA - Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA) on Wednesday scored 28 points to win a "What Do You Know" driving competition held in Kumasi.

They were followed by Association of Liberal Transport Operators (ALLTOPS) with 25 points while the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Metro Mass Transport shared the third place with 24 points apiece.

Each group had two fire extinguishers and warning triangles in the competition organised jointly by the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police and the Ashanti Regional Road Safety Committee.

Chief Superintendent Augustine Gyening, Ashanti Regional MTTU Commander, who commended the competitors said the event, initiated by the two organisations was aimed at reducing road accidents.

He observed that most accidents that occurred in the Region could be attributed to drivers not knowing road signs, offensive driving and improper behaviour on the roads.

Chief Supt Gyening who is also the Secretary of the Regional Road Safety Committee said he hoped that more drivers would participate in future competitions to broaden their knowledge on the Highway Code and other driving practices to enhance road safety.

Mr Abraham Tetteh, Ashanti Regional Director of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) stressed the need for drivers and driver's mates to upgrade their knowledge and skills in driving. This, he said, will not only enable them to be effective on the road but can also help to minimise road accidents.
