Popular Ghanaian playwright George Quaye has responded to critics who accused him of being affiliated with the New Patriotic Party following a picture he posted on Facebook.

George Quaye found himself at the centre of a political controversy after he shared a picture of NPP flagbearers Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh at his (NAPO’s) unveiling on 9 July 2024.

In the caption, he declared the picture 'beautiful' and asked for contact details for the photographer responsible.

Various individuals, including a former Deputy National Youth Organiser of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edem Agbana, told George Quaye to be open about his political affiliations.

In his response on July 11, Quaye pointed out that the responses strayed from the intended purpose of the post, with none addressing the actual content or connecting to the photographer.

He clarified his stance on Ghanaian politics, stating that his position has always been clear to those who know him.

“None [of the replies] addressed what was asked. None referenced, tagged, or even shared with a connection to the photographer.”

"What we got; 'Angry' opposition 'soldiers.' Happy party faithfuls. And those just ready to fight anyone they think doesn’t align with them. The most interesting part, though, is the number of opposition party members who shared it," he said.

He also criticised the expectation that one should openly display their political affiliations, as it was one's personal choice whether to declare it or not.

"Just for clarity, where I stand as far as GH Politics is concerned has never been in doubt. Those who know me know it. The fact that you wear yours like armour doesn’t mean everyone should. What you may call 'cowardice' may also be someone’s style. So please stop barking 'Be Bold Be Bold,'" he added.
