Police arrest fake ECG staff for duping people

Kumasi, June 18, GNA - The Police in Kumasi on Thursday arrested Stephen Aggrey alias "Abiola" described as a notorious electrician who posed as a staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and succeeded in duping one Gilbert Yeboah of Oforikrom of 850,000 cedis. Mr William Boateng, Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the ECG who briefed the Ghana News Agency on the arrest, said the culprit used an ECG identity card of one Stephen Appiah, a staff of the company to sell a credit meter to Mr Yeboah.

He said Mr Yeboah, however, detected that the meter was defective and therefore went to the ECG office for a replacement, but when he was asked to produce documents covering the meter he could not do so. According to Mr Boateng, Mr Yeboah then mounted a search for Aggrey and spotted him at the Maxima Junction at Oforikrom and confronted him.

He said a fierce struggle ensued between Mr Yeboah and Aggrey but passers-by came to his aid and they succeeded in overpowering Aggrey and handed him over to the police.

Mr Boateng appealed to the public to be wary of the activities of some electricians who impersonated ECG staff and succeeded in duping people.

He advised prospective customers of the ECG to transact business directly with the company so that they could obtain official receipts. 18 June 04
