Police arrests suspected cable thieves

Goaso (B/A) July 22, GNA - Police at Goaso have arrested four persons suspected of stealing large quantities of high tension electric cables meant for the extension of power to some parts of Asunafo District in Brong Ahafo. Babayara Abubakari, 30, Razak Yussif, 24, Appiah Kubi, 24 and Fatawu Yussif, 26, driver, allegedly stole the cables from Kasapin and concealed them under plantain and other farm produce in a cargo truck bound for Kumasi.

Police said the vehicle was impounded at Goaso at a time when none of the suspects was on board and sent to the charge office but the suspects later called to claim ownership and were apprehended. Appiah Kubi told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that he and his colleagues were employees of Linear Electricals, a Kumasi-based electrical company and the cables were part of the company's materials meant for work at Asarekrom in the District. The Goaso District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Cephas Bediako, however, disclosed that the company's foreman had denied any knowledge about the conveyance of the cables to Kumasi.

Meanwhile the Goaso Circuit Court, presided by Mr Justice S.K.A. Asiedu has remanded the four suspects into prison custody to re-appear on July 28.
